Emotional Goodbyes on the Appalachian Trail | Day 66 Thru-Hike Adventure (2026)

On Day 66 of our Appalachian Trail journey, we encountered a mix of emotion and determination. After a heartwarming morning at a trail angel's house, where we were treated to breakfast and a ride to the trailhead, the day took an unexpected turn. PK, one of our hiking companions, was preparing for his final stretch before heading home for two weeks. While we were eager to keep moving and maintain our pace, PK's departure left a void, and we knew our paths would diverge for a while.

The day's challenges began with a series of demanding mountain climbs, under the relentless sun. The heat and humidity were oppressive, and our hearts were racing as we chugged water to stay hydrated. My dad, in particular, was struggling with the terrain, but he persevered. As we reached the next water source, a sense of gloom settled over us. We were just a couple of miles away from PK, and the thought of saying goodbye weighed heavily on our hearts.

During this poignant moment, my mind wandered to my dad, who was hiking a bit behind. I wondered what was keeping him, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The 800-mile marker, a significant milestone, was supposed to be a celebration, but instead, it became a bittersweet moment. PK had planned to hike to this point and be picked up, but the Dutch Dragon, a legendary landmark, eluded us.

Dreamcatcher and I bid our temporary farewells to PK, and we sat at the 800-mile marker, reminiscing about our time together. PK returned, realizing he had forgotten to mail some letters and to gift Dreamcatcher her new headlamp. After this brief interlude, we set out again, determined to find the elusive dragon. However, just as we were getting closer, I took a painful fall, rolling my ankle. Despite the setback, we managed to find my dad and continue our journey.

As the day drew to a close, we set up camp, exhausted and emotional. The Appalachian Trail never fails to surprise and move us, and this day was no exception. It's a constant reminder of the beauty and challenges of long-distance hiking, and I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the trail angels who have supported us along the way. As we rest, we reflect on the day's events, and I can't help but wonder what the future holds for us and PK. Will we ever catch up again? Only time will tell.
